Plano Concave Cylindrical Lens

Cylindrical lenses as a kind of optical components are used to correct astigmatism in the eye and in rangefinders, to produce astigmatism, tretching a point of light into a line, they are widely used in bar code scanning, projection optics systems, laser projection, laser measurement systems and holography. A cylindrical lens is demonstrated using two planar substrates and a homogeneous liquid crystal (LC) layer. The top substrate has slit electrodes on its outer surface and the bottom has a transparent electrode on its inner surface. An applied voltage across the cell induces a cylindrical-like gradient refractive index within the LC layer which causes light to focus. The focal length is tunable by the applied voltage. Such a cylindrical lens can be easily fabricated with wide aperture size. Cylindrical lenses have a spherical radius in one direction. This enables the light to be focused in one axis. A point of light can thus be stretched into a single line.
