Polyelectrolytes are macromolecules that, when dissolved in a polar solvent like water, have a (large) number of charged groups covalently linked to them. In general, polyelectrolytes may have various kinds of such groups. Homogeneous polyelectrolytes have only one kind of charged group, e. g. only carboxylate groups.
