It is an important part of the Upanayanam or Thread Ceremony, traditionally performed for boys from the Brahmin, Kshatriya, and Vaishya castes.
During this ceremony, the initiate is introduced to the Gayatri Mantra and takes a vow to lead a disciplined, spiritual, and knowledgeable life. The Janeu consists of three strands, representing purity of thought, word, and deed, as well as symbolic duties toward God, ancestors, and teachers.
