POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE(KOH) DESCRIPTION

 POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE (KOH), also known as caustic potash, is a white, flaky, odorless solid that is highly alkaline and corrosive. It has many industrial and laboratory uses, including: 

·         Manufacturing: Used to make soaps, detergents, biodiesel, rayon, paper, dyestuffs, and petroleum products 

·         Electroplating: Used as an electrolyte in alkaline batteries and in electroplating 

·         Laboratory: Used as a common reagent for titrations and pH adjustments 

·         Water treatment: Used to adjust pH and neutralize wastewater to remove acidity and heavy metals 

·         Drain and oven cleaners: A common ingredient in commercial drain and oven cleaners

·         Safety

Highly toxic and can cause irritation to the skin and mucous membranes of the eyes and nose. Swallowing even small amounts can lead to acute poisoning and can be life-threatening. 

·         Solubility

Soluble in water, alcohol, and glycerol but insoluble in oil. It produces a great deal of heat when dissolved in water, alcohols, or treated with acids. 

·         Reaction with acids

Reacts with various acids, and this acid-base reaction is used for the production of potassium salts.
