damar batu is the petrified natural resin of ancient shorean trees. It is obtained by collecting the hardened resin exudates, lying below the ground in fossilized form, close to the tree roots. the collected resin is then scraped using iron bristled brushes to remove mud and dirt residue and then sun dried. indonesia is the largest source for the damar batu.
“batu” means stone and it is the name given to damar collected from the ground. It is much harder than other resins. It has brown and black colours with various sizes (from 1 cm to 20cm). The quality of damar batu is determined mainly by the size of the resin lump, their colour and the amount of damar dust. The main grades of damar batu are bombay quality, calcutta quality and dust.
it is mainly used in the manufacture of paints, putty, varnish/shellac, water-resistant coatings and injection moulding materials. Damar batu is traditionally used as wood boat putty by way of mixing with kerosene. It has also been used for incense because releases a pleasant odour when burnt or heated. It is also used as a natural mosquito repellent.
