A reciprocating pump is a type of positive displacement pump that moves a fixed volume of fluid with each stroke of a piston, plunger, or diaphragm inside a cylinder.
It works by suction and discharge strokes:
Suction stroke – the piston moves back, creating a vacuum that draws fluid into the cylinder through a suction valve.
Discharge stroke – the piston moves forward, forcing the fluid out through a delivery valve at high pressure.
Flow rate is constant for a given speed, unlike centrifugal pumps where flow varies with system pressure.
