Cessation of menstruation is menopause. It is a genetically programmed arrest of ovarian function. Around 50 years, a woman's body starts to change. After a long career of producing eggs and estrogen, the ovaries take an early retirement and the body goes through the hormone withdrawal process - menopause. The average age of menopause is 51 years old, although this varies. At menopause a woman's level of estrogen and progesterone, hormones that cause menstruation, decrease and thus menstruation ceases.

After menopause (post menopause) there is an increased risk of osteoporosis because estrogen hormone depletes. Although all women are affected by menopause, some women don't experience menopausal symptoms, while others benefit from the medical treatment of the symptoms.
