As an industry leading custom manufacturer, at Plastic Products, Inc. we are often called on by customers to lend expertise in the early stages of product development. The ring seal in each of the components shown here is a small seat that is used by a customer in the aerospace industry. The customer contacted us to create this experimental part for them out of a 15% polyimide PTFE material. The seat has an outer diameter of 0.75", an inner diameter of 0.735', and a length of 0.2". The part was turned on a CNC Hardinge lathe to geometric tolerances of ±0.0005" for the outer diameter and ±0.001" for the inner diameter, according to ANSI Y14.5 and customer specifications. We made eight of these prototypes for the customer, with a turnaround time of 2 days.
During testing, the customer concluded that the 15% polyimide filled PTFE material was not suitable for their application. In search of an alternate material, the customer asked for our opinion regarding the optimal material, among LDPE, PTFE, Dyneon TFM 1700 PTFE, HDPE, and UHMWPE. However, because the customer could not provide sufficient details regarding the application, we did not feel it was prudent to recommend a single material. Instead, samples were produced from all of these materials, allowing the customer to perform further testing in order to accurately determine the most suitable material choice. Samples were provided for testing within two weeks, preventing costly delays in the development process. For additional details regarding this custom machining and development project
