Rougher Cutter

a roughing tools the type with a wavy corncob outer flute cuts into the part at a higher ratio to the rotation. the spiral flute end mill compared to a straight flute does a similar function. these lower the shock load during the cutter rotation both enabling a heavier cutting load. Some end mills with fewer flutes are called roughing end mills as the fewer flutes mean they are less likely to fill up with chips that cannot get out. if you ever used a rotary file which can have 10 to 50 teeth you will find out quickly they quickly fill up with chips and stop cutting as efficiently.
