Backer rod, also known as backer foam or caulking rod, is a flexible foam material used in construction joints, particularly in combination with sealants, to fill gaps and prevent the penetration of moisture, air, and other substances.
Backer rods are typically made from closed-cell polyethylene foam, although other materials like open-cell foam or rubber may also be used depending on the application requirements.
Backer rods come in various sizes and shapes to accommodate different joint widths and configurations. Common shapes include round, rectangular, and trapezoidal profiles. Sizes range from small diameters for narrow joints to larger diameters for wider joints.
Backer rods are inserted into joints before applying sealant. The rod should be pressed firmly into the joint to ensure proper bonding with the sealant and to maintain its position during sealant application. Proper sizing is essential to ensure adequate compression of the rod within the joint.
