Contact SupplierSenna (Senna Angustifolia) herb’s leaves and pods have been shown the laxative activity. Senna belongs to the family- Fabaceae, collectively serves purgative, anthelmintic, antipyretic, cathartic, laxative, vermifuge, diuretic, detoxing, colon cleansing & body detoxing properties. The medicinal property of Senna can be attributed mainly to the anthraquinone glycosides, especially sennoside A and B. It resistant to acid digestion in the stomach as well as enzymatic digestion by small intestine due to possessing beta-glycosidic bond, typical dietary fibers. Due to an inability to be metabolized and absorbed, they are then sent to the large intestines (colon) where colonic bacteria (of the Bifidobacterium class) can hydrolyze the bond and release free rhein anthrone, which is bioactive in the colon. It may increase intestinal muscle contraction. In addition, its mucilage content decreases bodily absorption of fluid leading to an enhancement of the final laxative action.
