The pin shears off incase the torque of the whole coupling exceeds the rated torque.GBM Shear Pin coupling assembly consists of Shear Pin, Shear pin plates, Bush, Ball Bearing, Ball Retainer.GBM Shear Pin is fastened to Shear Pin Plates (along with Bush) which in turn is fastened to the sleeves of the gear couplings. One of the plates are designed to accommodate a ball bearing which gives smoother movement of the total assembly.
