Silicon Carbide

First, Overview of silicon carbide :
Silicon carbide is also known as emery or refractory sand, silicon carbide is made of quartz sand, petroleum coke (or coal), wood (need to add salt when produce green silicon carbide ) ,these raw material smelted in electric resistance furnace at high temperature . In contemporary C, N, B and other high-tech non-oxide refractory raw material, silicon carbide is the most widely used and the most economical, can be called emery or refractory sand. At present, industrial production of silicon carbide is divided into black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide in china, are both hexagonal crystals, a specific gravity of 3.20 - 3.25, the micro-hardness is 2840 ~ 3320kg mm2.
Second, the silicon carbide source:
The molecular formulaof silicon carbide is SiC, it�s hardness is between corundum and diamond mechanical strength is higher than corundum, can be used as abrasives and refractories. The successful development of silicon carbide industry is in 1891, was the earliest man-made abrasive. In the meteorite and the Earth's crust, although the presence of a small amount of silicon carbide, but has not yet found mineral resources available. Pure silicon carbide is colorless and transparent crystals .due to the different type and contain amount of impurities ,silicon carbide present pale yellow, green, blue and even black, transparency varies with its purity. Silicon carbide crystal structure is divided into α-SiC and cube hexagonal or rhombohedral of β-SiC (called cubic silicon carbide).
