The Mayfield skull clamp is a surgical instrument that provides rigid, three-point skeletal fixation of a patient's head during neurosurgery and other procedures.

Function and use

• Intracranial surgeries: For tumor removal, aneurysm clipping, or brain trauma.
• Cervical spine surgeries: To ensure precise spinal alignment during fusion or decompression.

• Single-pin arm: An adjustable arm with one pin. It is typically positioned on one side of the head, often in the forehead or parietal area.
• Double-pin rocker arm: A swiveling arm with two pins. This arm is placed on the opposite side of the head, and its conical pins ensure uniform pressure across the three points of contact.
• Torque screw: A mechanism that controls the clamping force of the pins. It is tightened to a specific pressure (typically 60–80 pounds for adults) to provide secure fixation without risking bone penetration.
• Disposable pins: The three conical, single-use pins are interchangeable and come in adult and child sizes.

• Patient factors: Surgeons must consider individual patient factors like thin skulls or bone fragility from conditions like chronic dialysis. Alternatives such as horseshoe headrests or halo rings may be recommended in these cases.
