What's the pump casing?

The pump casing is a metal casting outer housing, pump volute or pump shell that holds a pump and protects the internal pump parts, allowing fluid to flow through while maintaining pressure and preventing leaks by sealing off the inside of the pump from the atmosphere.

The two main types of casings in centrifugal pumps are volute casings and diffuser casings. A very common classification of pump casings is the diffuser construction. A diffuser is actually a series of vanes surrounding the impeller which accepts the discharge of liquid from the impeller.
