It is associated with various communities living around Lake Victoria in East Africa. It's local names are omena (Kenya), dagga (Tanzania) and mukene (Uganda). Being a fast swimming fish of the open waters, it has been able to withsatnd the ecological upheavals mainly caused by the predatory nile perch. It is mainly caught at night using light attraction during moonless nights. It is sold to women who spread it out for drying in the sun. It is mostly consumed as a cheap and affordable source of protein and calcium.
