They are generally based on one of two core binder systems, Hydrocarbons or Resin Esters.
Thermoplastic coatings are generally homogeneous dry mixes of binder resins, plasticizers, glass beads, pigments, fillers and additives.
Their usage has increased over other types of paints mainly due to the performance benefits of increased durability, retro-reflectivity, excellent adhesion, skid resistance, good visibility, outstanding resistance to traffic wear and abrasion, high softening point (above 95deg. C), environmentally friendly (No Solvent), fast drying time and excellent heat stability.
Thermoplastic Markings are applied using special designed machines for application. It is Pre-Heated to 200deg. C before feeding it into the apparatus which is often a screed box, an extruder or a spray gun.
Immediately after the thermoplastic is applied, glass beads are shot onto the hot material to embed it into the surface before the plastic hardens.
These beads provide the initial retro-reflection and as the marking wears off the initial beads are lost and the beads mixed with the binder are uncovered, providing long term reflectivity.
Most thermoplastic paints are produced in White and Yellow colors, but other colors can also be produced on demand.
PGPI manufacture thermoplastic road marking paints according to B.S.3262: 1989 (British Standard), AASHTO M249 (American Standard) or any other standard specified by the customer.
