Viscosity Bitumen

Viscosity Bitumen:

Viscosity or VG grade is the bitumen based on its viscosity. In order to grade the bitumen based on viscosity, BIS revised IS-73-1992 specifications  (Viscosity at 60°C). 

Based on this  grading, there are four types VG-10, VG-20, VG-30 & VG-40. A few qualification tests like specific gravity, water content, ductility, loss on heating & Farass breaking point were removed from IS:73-1992 as these tests do not have any relationship with the performance of the product.

The application of VG Bitumen is on spraying applications such as surface-dressing and paving in very cold climate. It is also used to manufacture Bitumen emulsion and Modified Bitumen products.
