The wear ring is often used as a shielding measure to prevent the wear and tear of both the housing and impellers. The high abrasive wear of soft rubber in the wear ring collects sand and dust particles and enhances the lift of the machinery.

Rubber wear rings consist of metal inserts for stiffness during installation. Usually, wear rings are advised in sandy areas where higher abrasion is expected and spare parts can be quickly replaced.

Pump wear rings are considered as essentials as they have a significant effect on pump reliability, performance and safety.

Many of the centrifugal pump designs have removable rotary wear rings on the impeller and stationary wear rings inside the housing (case wear rings). The wear rings fulfil three primary purposes:

• Establish a contact area between revolving and stationary sections within the pump
• Reduce internal recirculation from pump discharge to pump suction or between phases
• Establish hydraulic forces that balance the rotor of the pump

The wear ring clearance affects pump discharge pressure, flow, performance, energy consumption, vibration and coalescence. The use of wear rings with decreased clearance has a positive effect on both of these aspects.
