Coated calcium carbonate powder is a type of calcium carbonate powder that has been modified with various acids, such as stearic acid, to make it hydrophobic and compatible with organic materials. Coated calcium carbonate powder is widely used as a white filler in various products, especially plastic pipes, where it can impart strength, whiteness and cost savings. Coated calcium carbonate powder is produced by spraying a solution of stearic acid onto dry calcium carbonate powder and then milling it to get an even coating of the particles. The coating amount is usually about 1% of the weight of the calcium carbonate powder, depending on the particle size and surface area. Coated calcium carbonate powder has a high purity, typically above 99%, and a fine particle size, usually around 2 microns (D50).
