Spirulina and lettuce, peas etc. are ideal. Occasional treats of Cyclops and Brine Shrimp should also be offered. Origin Africa; Xenotilapia leptura is found in Lake Tanganyika. Sexing There are no coloration differences, but the males tend to be slightly larger than the females. Breeding Xenotilapia leptura share the mouth brooding, the pair will separate from the group for spawning. The female will collect the eggs, but if there are too many the male will collect the rest. On most occasions, the female will do all of the initial brooding but after 17-20 days she will transfer the fry to the male. Even when the fry are released both parents will guard them. Lifespan The expected life span for Xenotilapia leptura is 15 years. Short description To control aggression, large numbers of these should be housed together. Fine sand should be added to the tank for a substrate along with plenty of rockwork. It is best to purchase a group of these fish initially and let them form their own pairs.This fish can be found as Asprotilapia leptura too.
