Benzalkonium chloride can be prepared by methylating a blend of fatty acids or a primary amine from fatty acid to produce dimethyl alkylamine. This is further quarternized with benzyl chloride to form benzalkonium chloride. Benzalkonium chloride is soluble in water, alcohol, and acetone.
