Heavy fuel oil has been homogenised successfully for many years. This process considerably improves the fuel quality and results in a better combustion.The homogeniser breaks up the long asphaltene chains in the fuel and enables these to be burnt accordingly. Several ship owners have reported 1% fuel savings and it is also possible to use the LEMAG FQI to reduce sludge by approx. 50%.To achieve this two LEMAG safety-homogenisers have to be installed, one before the separator and one in the booster circuit before the duplex filter. The return of investment should be achieved in less than a year.
The fuel-oil homogenizer is based on the stator-rotor principle. The conical rotor with a highly efficient grinding profile runs against the stator with only very low clearance but high rotating speed. This creates the strong frictional forces required to break up the long asphaltene chains. It does not however alter cat-fines. These have to be removed to avoid the fuel acting as a "lapping paste" for the fuel injection parts and cylinders. Any condensed water from the service tank can however by emulsified into the fuel by the LEMAG safety-homogeniser to protect fuel injection parts from corroding.

Why should a SAFETY-Homogeniser be installed?

  • The homogenisation process increases the fuel temperature. Usually the heat energy is absorbed by the fuel flowing through the system. However, if the flow through the homogeniser is interrupted, the stagnant fuel will heat up by approx. 3, 5°C per minute which can cause the equipment to fail.
  • LEMAG FQI safety-homogenisers therefore permanently measure fuel temperature and also check that the rotor behind the magnetic coupling is turning. The voltage, temperature, flow etc are of course also monitored and will if necessary open a common alarm contact.
  • Further advantages of the LEMAG FQI safety-homogeniser include a simple, stepless adjustment of the gap between stator and rotor. This process does not require the housing to be opened and is carried out using a central adjuster with only one adjusting nut to avoid any possible jamming.
  • Wear and tear of the unit´s magnetic coupling and bearing is also considerably reduced due to the use of inner heat pockets made of stainless steel, which avoid any damages caused by cold residual fuel during the start-up procedure.

Centrifugal Oil Filtration — Principle of Operation :

  • The oil from a pressure point on an engine is fed through the side inlet of the Centrifuge. When the oil pressure exceeds 1.3 to 2.5 BAR, the spring loaded plunger will be pushed back and the oil enters the rotor assembly through the central spindle. The rotor assembly gets pressurized and the only exit point for the oil are the two tangentially opposed nozzles at the base. The rotor assembly has two bushes, one at the top and one at the bottom and spins freely around the spindle. The action of oil exiting through the nozzles gives it a reverse direction spin.
  • The RPM is directly proportional to the inlet pressure. The oil is returned back under gravity through the central hole at the base of the centrifuge. At 5 BAR pressure the RPM generated for a model LC50 is 7400 which generates centrifugal force 2000 times that of gravity. Thus, any particle heavier than oil is compacted onto the inner rotor wall. At pre¬determined intervals this can be easily cleaned with the help of a wooden spatula.
  • The centrifuge has no consumable parts and is capable of removing sub micron particles from the oil. Ensure that the minimum operating pressure is at least 4 BAR and should not exceed 7 BAR. Optimum results are achieved at 5 BAR pressure.


Importance of removing carbon soot by using Centrifuge : Centrifugal force is capable of removing a wide range of particles extending into the sub-micron range. Analysis of the dirt collected by centrifuge reveals an ability to remove particles of less than one micron in size including engine clogging soot, oil films protecting critical engine components are equally as small. If not removed contaminant particles in this size range cause component wear and a consequent reduction of engine durability.

The LEMAG CONTROLmag with an integrated LEMAG DIESELswitch fuel change-over system is designed to carry out the change-over process between heavy fuel oil and low sulphur fuel automatically and safely.LEMAG CONTROLmag also enables the operator to switch fuels running at full load, as sensors will detect if the fuel temperature changes too rapidly. The system will then freeze the position to protect the engine´s fuel injection system from a thermal shock and generate an alarm. For safety the fuel change-over process can also be stopped manually.

The system is safe and simple to operate.
All you have to do is :

  • Choose time frame for change over
  • Choose change over direction (HFO -> DFO or DFO -> HFO)
  • Start the process!


Absolutely Linear Change-over Process : The integrated LEMAG DIESELswitch system ensures an absolutely linear change-over process to avoid any scuffing or blocked plunger and barrels or nozzles. Different tank levels can lead to substantial differences in fuel pressure that can be difficult for ball valves or standard change-over system to control. Tests have shown that only 4% movement of a lever of a 3-way valve can cause 90% change-over as shown in the following graph.LEMAG DIESELswitch however controls the change-over process with its especially designed 3-way valve and exchangeable orifice inserts. These inserts have special opening surfaces that cause a controlled pressure difference to be able to control the change over and can be applied for all fuel systems. 
Automatic Cooler Control :LEMAG CONTROLmag does not only concentrate on the gradual change-over of fuel, but also takes the entire process into account as the following problems can occur if e.g. the cooler is not controlled automatically -

  • Heat energy from the booster pumps
    • During low load operation the supply and circulating pumps create a lot of heat energy, which heats up the MDO. In many cases the fuel temperature cannot be reduced sufficiently by just adding just new fuel.
  • Risk of DFO temperature drop
    • If the cooler is started too early, the temperature drop can be more than 12°C / min, which can severely damage the engine.
  • Risk of DFO cooler blocking
    • If the cooler is operated incorrectly and at the wrong time the fuel flow can easily be blocked by HFO cooling down too rapidly.

 

  • LEMAG has already recorded many DFO temperature high alarms and has managed to avoid any resulting safety risks accordingly. To date these situations were always created by incorrectly operated (trace) heating systems.
  • LEMAG CONTROLmag also has an extensive safeguard system integrated with over 50 alarm parameters, which also takes all necessary precautions against black-outs to ensure a safe fuel change-over process.
  • LEMAG CONTROLmag is simple to install on both newbuilds and existing vessels and can handle different tank levels up to 25 m without additional MDO/MGO pumps. The basic system consists of -
    • Safety change over valve
    • With magnetic coupling to prevent leakages
    • Static mixing tube
    • Electronic cabinet with advanced software

 

  • The LEMAG DIESELswitch fuel change-over system can also be delivered on a foundation containing all system components, pipes and internal cabling. All systems are equipped with a tamper-proof data logger to prove that the correct fuel was used in regulated areas. It is also possible to integrate a flow and density meter to calculate total fuel consumption.
