Bridge washer help maintain alignment and mounting position of valves on tubes in service. When the hex nut locks the washer in place on the stem, the flanges contact the rim on either side of the valve hole. When the tube is inflated, the joint of the valve base and tube stock is bridged away from the rim, and the valve is thus supported straight in the center of the rim hole or slot. Bridge washes also reduce the protrusion of the valve through the rim for better clearance of brake drum, gears, etc.
