(Chatham also produces lab-grown diamonds, which always have been distributed in-house.)Chatham master gem cutters cuts away 80% of the rough to create faceted emeralds that are essentially flawless in clarity and highly saturated in color.A Chatham sapphire is not an imitation, ratherit is an actual sapphire grown in a human-controlled environment. This is not dissimilar from the way pearls are cultured.

European settlement of the former city of Chatham area began with a naval dockyard in 1792, at the mouth of the Thames River.The town was named after William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham. It was built as a naval dockyard, a characteristic shared by Chatham, Kent, England.
