Feldspar is holding the major deposits of the earth’s crust, almost 60% of total deposits from the earth. Feldspar deposits comprise two major parts Plagioclase Feldspar and Alkali Feldspar. The composition of Plagioclase Feldspar falls under Albeit and Anorthite, whether Alkali Feldspar falls between Albeit and Orthoclase. Alkali Feldspar has a wide range of Industrial uses due to the contamination of Alkalis like Oxides of Potassium & Sodium and Alumina. Due to these properties, Feldspar plays vital role as fluxing agent in Glass and Ceramic applications and can be used as filler in rubber, plastic, paint and adhesive industries. Alkali Feldspars can be further categorized in three categories Potassium Feldspar, Sodium Feldspar and Mixed Feldspar. APPLICATIONS Glass: Potassium Feldspar plays very important role in glass manufacturing. The alkali part of potassium feldspar acts as a flux, and thus it is being used as fluxing agent in glass manufacturing whether it is scientific glass, TV Picture Tube, Float Glass, and any other glass products. The Basic and Vital ingredient in manufacturing the glass is Quartz but Potassium Feldspar is to reduce the melting temperature of quartz which reduces the production cost. These types of industries usually demand Potassium Feldspars in Granular form, but the sieve analysis varies by industry to industry. Ceramic: Due to its fluxing property it is also used in ceramic wall and floor tiles manufacturing. It is used in ceramic body and sometimes in Glazes manufacturing due to its strength and hardness. Second vital content in Potassium Feldspar – Alumina provides strength of to the body. This type of industries normally uses Potassium Feldspar in Powder form between 200-300 mesh BSS. But nowadays some big industries have started using grits form also. Sanitary ware: Same as Ceramic it forms the body part of sanitary ware products. These industries use the powder form of Potassium Feldspar. Others: Feldspars are being used by other industries like paint and plastic, these types of industries require fine mesh of this product.
