Misalignment of machines connected by rigid couplings not only causes excessive wear of couplings and machine parts but also increase power consumption. When two out of line shafts are connected rigidly, severe bending stresses are set up in each shaft. For each revolution, the shaft passes through a complete cycle of tension and compression stresses and would be likely to fatigue the shaft material and considerable heat and damage the whole mechanism.

Heat treatment is carried out in the most modern plants and special heat treatment like Gas Carburizing, Nitriding, Induction hardening are also carried out. All forging are ultrasonically tested for internal defects and are normalized, annealed or stress relieved before further processing.

The advantages of using Geared Coupling on all directly connected machinery is now recognized and appreciated by engineers and operating men. Gear couplings are intended to compensate for the usual and unavoidable errors in alignment and should allow free lateral flowto the connected shafts. Even when favourable conditions permit perfect alignment to the two Shafts, there is no assurance they will remain so, the vibrations, the sinking of foundation, wear of bearings and inaccuracies in machining are all common enemies to the safe and efficient operation of connected machinery.

UGI Mill Shears & Saw Machine has made from EN-8 Steel fabricated stress relived body construction with control panel, starter, Automatic Operating System & Centralize Oil Lubrication System . UGI Engineering offers a full line of hot and cold shears necessary in a bar or rod mill for a wide variety of requirements, such as head tail cropping , dividing, sampling or scrapping, cutting-to-length. Sawing units are available for rails, medium-large sections, large bars, and special steel grades, where sawing is preferred over shearing.

UGI Engineering cooling beds are designed using standard elements that can be combined in accordance with plant product mix requirements and production capacity. The design features cover a variety of applications : rounds from Ø 8 to 100 mm .

Universal Gear Couplings are designed to handle the misalignments of connected shafts. These couplings in an assembled condition are ready to take misalignment (see fig, 1, 2 & 3)

UGI Engineering are using high quality of components in Furnace including refractory bricks, Burners ( as per the design of Indian Institute of Petroleum, Dehradun ) and operate at low excess air levels, give improved fuel economy and reduced scaleburning losses. This saves on steel in addition to better surface finish of the rolled components. The heating strategy has a major influence on both the quality of reheated pieces and on the amount of fuel used for reheating.

All mill stands are built heavy to with stand high rolling load. Roll necks are with antifriction bearings. Close control set up of screw down & axial shift of rolls are provided to prevent roll skewing during rolling. Finishing Mills are 4-High design to give 8 gage accuracy. Edging stands are provided for edge control.

Narrow strips are coiled are edge with controls to keep the edges in time . Vibratory slat conveyers is with controlled speed to feed the strip coiler.

Coil carry conveyors are designed with optimum space utilization and to prevent scratches on strip surface.

The twist free finishing block is of an advanced design, engineered to meet the strenuous demands of today’s high speed rod mills. The configuration comprises an electric motor driving through a synchronizing gearbox to give twin output extended to bevel gearboxes to from the two main mill drive-shafts of the block. From these drive shafts the bevel gears take the drive to the stands at 45º on each side of the vertical center line so giving 90 º stand to stand relationships. The drive shaft’s and bevel boxes etc, is all below pass line thus giving a low overall mill height for maximum operator access, visibility and operation.

The stand design incorporates many features and vital for the best operation and production of quality rod. The roll roll holder is of a design which allows the carbide rolls to be mounted on the holders, without introduction of hoop stresses into the carbide, with a consequential reduction in the incidence of roll breakages. This design together with the very high roll pass life, has established installations with greater roll life. This of course has noticeable effects on the mill availability times and hence on production figures.

The controlled cooling system consists of a roller type conveyor advancing the rod spirals over axial flow air fans and diffusion chambers. To ensure satisfactory mechanical operation under the arduous conditions of slow cooling, the conveyor will have solid rollers of a length sufficient to move their bearings away from the heat source, the bearing themselves being housed in water cooled housing. UGI has the expertise in manufacturing high quality PINION GEAR BOXES specially suitable for Hot Steel Rolling Mills. Input shaft is of right quality Forged Alloy Steel (EN-24) ultrasonically tested. Bearing Journal properly ground . Gear Wheel is also made out of forged alloy steel (EN-19) ultrasonically tested . Gear Teeth generated on Hobbing machines . Housing is fabricated dully stress relieved and properly machined with boring operation done on Horizontal Boring machines. We use SKFFAGNTN make bearings . Transparent window provided on top to observe oil splashing for Teeth Lubrication of Gears. Air breather is also provided for purpose equalisation. Oil seals of very good quality are also provided at input & output ends of shafts to prevent leakages of oil, which is a normal phenomenon in gear boxes.
