The  swing  check  valve  is  a  uni-directional  valve  that  allows  flow  in  one direction  and  it  does  not  allow  the  flow  in  reverse  direction.  This  is generally used in pump discharge lines at the downstream of the pump to prevent  back  flow  of  water  to  the  pump  in  the  event  of  tripping  of  the pump  due  to  electricity  failure.  This  is  required  to  avoid  damage  to  the pump. 

When the pump is running, the flow from the pump upstream of the valve will  open  the  valve  disc.  The  angle  of  valve  opening  will  be  primarily governed by the forward flow/ velocity of water from the pump. 

Smooth  closure  of  the  valve  is  ensured  by  using  a  counter  weight.  The valve  can  be  supplied  with  hydraulic  dash  pot  to  prevent  disc  slamming and water hammer

This  valve  is  operated  by  the  hydraulic  cylinder  with  power  pack  with control  circuit.  The  hydraulic  cylinder  opens  the  valve  as  soon  as  pump motor starts. When the pump motor stops or trip due to electrical failure, suitable  control  signal  is  fed  into  the  hydraulic  power  pack  to  close  the valve  immediately  and  prevent  back  the  flow  into  the  pump.  This arrangement eliminates the needs for two separate valves which act as a shut off valve and non-return valve
