Fingerprint Based Attendance Record System

According to ancient Greek scripts BIOMETRICS means study of life. Biometrics studies commonly include fingerprint, face, iris, voice, signature and hand geometry recognition and verification. Many other modalities are in various stages of development and assessment. Among these available biometric traits Finger Print proves to be one of the best traits providing good mismatch ratio and also reliable. Registering the attendances of students has become a hectic task as sometimes their attendance may be registered or missed. To overcome this problem i.e. to get the attendances registered perfectly, we are taking the help of two different technologies viz. EMBEDDED SYSTEMS and BIOMETRICS. Firstly discussing about Biometrics we are concentrating on Fingerprint scanning. For this we are using FIM 3030N high voltage module as a scanner. This module has in-built ROM, DSP and RAM. In this we can store the fingerprints of up to 100 users. This module can operate in 2 modes i.e., Master mode and User mode. We will be using Master mode to register the fingerprints which will be stored in the ROM present on the scanner with a unique id. The fingerprint module will be interfaced with the microcontroller through serial interface. The images of the students of a particular class will be scanned and stored in the microcontroller. The students have to scan their images to register their attendance daily. When the student has to register his attendance on that particular day, he has to scan his fingerprint image. The fingerprint module scans the students image and passes the scanned image to the microcontroller. The controller reads the scanned image, compares this image with the already stored image. If both are matched, the students attendance will be registered for that day. If it is not matched, the students attendance will be marked as absent and buzzer indication will be given. By simply pressing a switch, we can get the list of absentees for that day. We can see details on 16X2 LCD. (In this project we can connect microcontroller to PC and PC maintain presents and absents list with help of C# application-But it is optional).

Smart Card Based Attendance System

In general, a smart card is an integrated circuit card with memory capable of making decisions. A smart card, chip card or integrated circuit card (ICC), is defined as any pocket-sized card with embedded integrated circuits which can process information. In this project, we are using a contact smart card where the information inside the card is communicated with the card reader by inserting card into the card reader. The card reader in this project used is an SR-90 SDK of 1KB memory size. The project is designed in such a way that the controller will be interfaced to the smart card reader through a line driver IC max232 for serial communication. On the other hand, the controller will also be interfaced to the PC serially. Serial communication is often used either to control or to receive data from an embedded microprocessor. Serial communication is a form of I/O in which the bits of a byte being transferred appear one after the other in a timed sequence on a single wire. Each student will be issued with a unique smart card. Whenever we insert the card into the reader, it gets the card information and sends to the microcontroller serially. So the controller receives the data and transmits it to the PC, as per the code logic. C# application in PC always interacts with serial port and it maintains the data base along with corresponding card details. So based on the received data the application can update the employee/student log. As per the design of the application, we can check the student logs on the required dates at any time. In this project 7805 is a regulator and it avoids noise spikes in power supply. SMART card modem is connected microcontroller through serial port. These SMART card modem works under 9600 or 4800 baud rates.
