Vitreous or Glassy carbon is a form of pure carbon produced by the thermal decomposition of a three-dimensionally crosslinked polymer. It has a high flexural strength. The zero open porosity gives a low permeability to gases. Glassy carbon has excellent resistance to a wide range of aggressive chemical environments and can, therefore, be used as an alternative material to precious metals for laboratory equipment and, for example, for electrodes in polarography.

Glassy carbon is widely practiced as electrode material in electrochemistry, as considerably as for high-temperature crucibles and as a part of some prosthetic devices.
The crystalline carbon electrode is one of the widely used working electrodes.It is a good inert electrode with good electrical conductivity, high hardness, high brightness, high hydrogen potential, a wide range of polarization and chemical stability.It can be used as an inert electrode directly for the anodic solution, voltammetric determination of the cathode and the Valencia ion, and it can also be used as a chemically modified electrode.

HOPG is widely used as a substrate for specimens to be examined in scanning probe microscopy. It is also used as a calibration specimen and cleaves almost like mica because of its layered structure. Unlike mica, HOPG is non-polar and, for samples where elemental analysis is required, it provides a carbon-only background. It consists of highly ordered planes of carbon atoms in (002) orientation and the quality of these parallel planes is defined by the mosaic spread angle.
