About Erode

Erode is one of the cities of South Indian state of India namely, Tamil Nadu. The city is situated on the banks of Kaveri river and has been governed by a number of rulers like Later Cholas, Vijayanagar Empire, Madurai Nayaks, the kingdom of Mysore, Cheras, Early Pandyas, Medieval Cholas at varied times. It is believed that the name Erode is given to the city because of its two water courses viz., Perumpalayam and Kalingarayan Canal. Erode itself means Eru Odai that is two rivers. Apart from this, the city is well connected to many parts via roads (national highways) as well as air and railways. The economy of Erode was flourished in the initial days because of the industries such as hand-loom weaving and carpet manufacturing.

Theology and Culture

Talking about the religion of this city then there is a wide number of Hindus that exists here. Apart from Tamil that is the official language here, English and Hindi languages are also spoken by many people. Like a lot of Tamil culture, Lord Siva is the supreme deity of the city. Moving on to the art, music and dance in Erode, the city is an abode of classical music and dance. Carnatic music is the most prominent one here. Here the folks prefer to wear the traditional Tamil dress where women will be seen in sarees and salwar suit and men will be seen wearing dhoti or lungi along with Angavastra and a shirt. For all the foodies out there don’t forget to try Erode Killu Kari, Uttappam, Poricha Kootu, Kanji, Payasam, Sambhar, Erode Pallipalayam Chicken, and Katti Paruppu as and when you visit the city.
