PMPD 1000 Dilution System

The PMPD 100 dilution system is a dilution system according to the ejector principle that was especially developed for the PMP application or the PMP measurement chain. The PMPD 100 achieves a dilution factor of 1:100 (see Figure 1) by means of a thermodiluter up to 200C. The PMPD dilution systems offer all the advantages of the other Palas product series of ejector diluters, e.g. a temporally constant dilution factor. The suitability of the PMPD 100 for the PMP measurement chain was confirmed at the METAS Institute in Switzerland (see measurement report no. 235-10383). The PMPD 1000 cascades a further dilution step as compared with PMPD 100. Representative dilution of particle size distribution of the Palas dilution systems by cascading VDI report no. 1973 from 2007 proved metrologically that a reproducible aerosol dilution is possible with the Palas dilution systems down to VF 100, 000.

KHG System

For different applications under high pressure or high temperature, e.g. in combustion processes, the aerosol can change essentially due to dilution and sampling. For this reason, the entire measurement chain has to be configured under isobaric and isothermal conditions. The KHG series dilution system is heatable for isothermal dilutions up to 200C and can also be configured pressure-resistant up to 10 bar overpressure for isobaric dilution. With the KHG system, both the compressed air supplied and the dilution system are self-heated. When using the KHG series in combination with the heatable andor pressure-resistant welas digital or Promo aerosol spectrometers from Palas a completely isobaric and isothermal measurement chain is ensured. This combination of devices is unique and is used successfully worldwide for isobaric and isothermal measurement tasks.

KHG 10 Heatable Dilution System

The KHG 10 series of heatable dilution system builds upon the VKL series ejector principle. In addition to the advantages of the VKL series, the KHG series dilution system is configured to be heatable to 150C (optionally up to 200C) and is additionally pressure-resistant up to 10 bar overpressure. Isothermal and isobaric dilution can therefore be achieved. With the KHG system, both the compressed air supplied and the dilution system are self-heated. The welas KHG 10 series of dilution systems can reduce the concentration of aerosols by the dilution factor 1:10 under isothermal conditions, also of very highly concentrated aerosols, in a defined and reliable way. Dilution factors of up to 1:100, 000 are achieved by cascading several KHG 10 systems. Function principle of the KHG 10: Particle-free air with the volume flow VR circulates through an annular passage around the suction nozzle. Thus, according to Bernoulli, a volume flow VAn is generated at the suction nozzle. The volume flow VR is heated to the required temperature of the aerosol to be measured using cartridge heaters, such that isothermal conditions prevail. The dilution factor VF is calculated according to the following formula: VF = VR + VAn VAn Care has to be taken with the heatable system of the KHG 10 system that the entire measurement chain is configured to be isothermal in order to avoid condensation or evaporation effects with liquid aerosols. Representative dilution of particle size distribution of the Palas dilution systems by cascading. VDI report no. 1973 from 2007 proved metrologically that a reproducible aerosol dilution is possible with the Palas dilution systems down to VF 100, 000.

VKL Series Dilution Systems

The VKL series of dilution systems according to the elector principle forms the basis for VDI guideline 3491 sheet 15. The welas VKL dilution systems are a classic among dilution systems, as they have been successfully used throughout the world since 1984. They are characterized by a particularly long service life and easy operation. The VKL series of dilution systems deliver a temporally constant, representative dilution with the factors 10 and 100. They can easily be cascaded down to a dilution factor of 1:1, 000, 000. The function of the cascaded VKL systems can be quickly and clearly validated by the user on-site. Depending on the application area, the VKL systems can be configured pressure-resistant to 10 bar overpressure or made of stainless steel for aggressive aerosols. The VKL systems can be combined with all common particle counters, i.e. for suction volume flows from the VKL step of approx. 0.03 lmin to 50 lmin.

PMPD Dilution System

The PMPD dilution system is used for emission measurements of vehicles and jet engines. The PMPD system is a dilution system according to the ejector principle that was especially developed for the PMP application or the PMP measurement chain. The Particle Measurement Programme or PMP is a programme for advancing the particle measurement technique for particulate vehicle exhaust gases. The PMPD consists of a vaporisation line heated to 200C, a dilution line also heated to 200C, the thermodiluter to remove volatile particles, followed by a second unheated dilution step. Each dilution step has a dilution factor of 1:10, which corresponds to a total dilution factor of 1:100. The efficiency of removing volatile particles was determined at METAS with 30 nm sized tetracontane (C40H82) droplets in accordance with "VPR Calibration Procedure AEA ED47382 Issue 5" (Volatile Particle Removal Efficiency) and is 0.99967.

Monitoring A Bin Blender By NIR - PAT

The blending of pharmaceutical ingredients is one of the critical processes during the production of pharmaceuticals. Product homogeneity and further processing is dependant on the characteristics of the incoming material and process conditions. Sample taking and analysis at the end of the process is most commonly used for quality control, however this does not provide any information to enable optimisation of the process and doesnt provide any process information.

Applying online NIR to this process allows the determination of the blending end point by statistical methods. Beside this option the quantitative analysis of API or functional ingredients by applying a chemometric calibration is possible too.
Based on the gained process data it is possible to optimize blending time, avoid faulty batches and prevent blend from being separated due to over-blending.

There is no longer need for conventional thief sampling and laboratory analysis which retard manufacturing processes and therewith raise production costs. This makes a PAT solution to a very valueable tool in process and formulation development, up-scaling, and routine use. Fully implemented and applied the online monitoring of blend uniformity is a key element for real-time release.

VDD Dilution System

Especially for diluting liquid aerosols, the VDD dilution system offers special advantages, e.g. with the variable dilution factor and minimization of losses with large droplets. With the VDD series, the input dilution air is controlled using a mass flow controller. The dilution factor of the VDD series is infinitely variable from 1 - 10. In combination with a downstream measuring device, e.g. welas digital or Promo, the particle size distribution and concentration is measured with the highest accuracy. A device combination of this kind is successfully used e.g. for measuring the droplet size of coolant lubricant.

PROCESS ANALYTICAL SERVICES

PAT applications extract real time data from a process by employing fast and (mostly) non-invasive spectroscopic and optical technologies and translate recorded raw data into meaningful process information in order to control the process in real time. In a traditional (non PAT) approach process performance can only be assessed via the quality of the end product. Adequate performance of the process can therefore only be judged retrospectively, when the end product already may have to be rejected.

Besides process control, PAT data can be used efficiently to increase process understanding during development, validation, transfer or routine manufacturing. PAT data can be seen as a process signature allowing for in-depth interpretation, mechanistic understanding and continuous improvement of your process.

A third possibility is to employ PAT as a substitute for traditional release testing, known as Real Time Release. This approach saves laborious analytical testing and logistical efforts and shortens the cycle time of manufacturing significantly.

Charge Aerosol Measurement System

The Charme charge aerosol measurement system developed by Palas is a high-capacity Faraday cup aerosol electrometer that measures the electrical charges on aerosol particles.

For years, aerosol electrometers have been used in research applications to measure the mean charge of an aerosol. If the charge state of the particles for monodisperse aerosols is known, then these devices are able to quickly and easily determine the number concentration of particles with an approx. size 2 nm.

In the case of polydisperse aerosols, a charger or neutralizer is often used to generate a defined charge distribution. If a particle size is then set using an upstream classifier (e.g. Palas DEMC), then the number concentration of the particles is able to be determined indirectly based on a current measurement (loadtime). An aerosol electrometer is often also used for the calibration of condensation particle counters (e.g. Palas UF-CPC). There is no absolute particle count standard. However, a current measurement is directly traceable to SI units. Condensation particle counters are able to be calibrated based on a counting comparison between the condensation particle counter and an aerosol electrometer.

U-SPMS 2700

The Palas universal scanning mobility particle sizer (U-SMPS) for high aerosol concentrations is available in two versions. The long classifying column (2700 model) is able to reliably determine particle size distributions of 8 to 1, 200 nm.

The Palas U-SMPS system includes a classifier [defined in ISO 15900 as a differential electrical mobility classifier (DEMC), also known as a differential mobility analyzer (DMA)], in which aerosol particles are selected according to their electrical mobility and passed to the outlet. The electrical charges carried by these particles are then measured in a downstream Charmeaerosol electrometer .

A major advantage of aerosol electrometers includes the fact that they enable very rapid measurements. However, this method requires a rather high number of charges. This limits the applicability to high aerosol concentrations (e.g. downstream from a combustion process or particle generator). The measurement of the charge per time unit (flow) is directly traceable to physical parameters. As a result, this method is primarily used as a reference during calibration of condensation particle counters.

INLINE NIR PAT SYSTEMS

Blend Uniformity:
We have developed a highly robust, maintenance free and regulatory accepted NIR method for monitoring blend uniformity, end-point detection and control of dry mixing processes. It provides an efficient alternative for thief sampling and has been successfully applied in productprocess development, up-scaling and manufacturing. In-line end-point detection and process control eliminate the need for extensive mapping of input material variability, resulting in direct efficiency benefits in development as well as in manufacturing. Additionally, the PAT application offers overall reduction in analytical resources, improved process understanding and consistent end product quality.

UGF System

Unlike the AGF series, UGF 2000 has a cyclone with built-in control air. The aerosol concentration is able to be varied by a factor of 500 using the control air introduced into the cyclone.

High-efficiency particulate air filters (with quality H10-U17) are tested in accordance with international conventions with an aerosol whose particle count is mainly within the so-called MPPS (Most Penetration Particle Size, dp = 0.1 0.3 m) range. The UGF 2000 provides this particle size spectrum exactly and the desired concentration.

Large droplets generate high mass flows and may contaminate these filters to such an extent that droplet loading causes the filters to be evaluated as better than they actually are during filter testing.

Exact isokinetic sampling is not necessary when sampling particles < 2 m. This is why the UGF 2000 system has been successfully used worldwide for HEPAULPA filter testing for over 25 years

INLINE NIR PAT SYSTEMS & IMAGING

Near Infrared vibrational spectroscopy is the best-known and most applied technique for in-line and at-line characterization of chemical and physical (intermediate) product properties. Numerous applications are known for at-line lab-systems as well as for in-line PAT systems and Imaging. NIR is particularly suitable for content and composition analysis and a common technique for identification of raw materials and end products.
Typical applications include content of specific ingredients or moisture in powders, tablets, extrudates, freeze dried products, suspensions, liquids and creams. NIR offers the possibility to analyse non-invasively at high speed in combination with very limited or no sample pre-treatment which makes the technology particularly interesting for larger sample amounts or analysis for which results are required within minutes.
