Botanically termed as ‘asparagus officinalis’, asparagus is a flowering plant of the lily family. A native to Europe, Northern Africa and Western Asia, it is now widely grown in both hemispheres and throughout temperate and tropical regions. The exact origin of this vegetable is not known because many wild types can be found throughout Europe and Asia. However, the most likely location is around the Mediterranean Sea where cultivation has been practiced for over 2000 years, first by the Greeks and then by the Romans (around 200 B.C.).
