What Is Candelilla Wax?

Candle tree wax, also known as candelilla wax, is a light yellow glossy waxy solid with an aromatic odor. It is a brittle and hard plant-based wax extracted from the bark of small candle tree shrubs in northern Mexico, southern Texas, southern California, and other regions of the United States. Candle tree wax contains special resin components and has strong temperature variability. In a molten mixture, it solidifies very slowly and cannot reach maximum hardness for a long time. Adding oleic acid or similar acids will slow down the crystallization process and rapidly increase the softness. It is insoluble in water but soluble in acetone, chloroform, turpentine, and alcohol benzene mixed solvents. The main components are alkyl esters, free alcohols, hydrocarbon compounds and free acids, which are mainly used in creams and lipstick cosmetics to improve the heat stability. They can also be used as hardeners of soft waxes and substitutes for beeswax and carnauba wax.
