The obtusifolia splits are obtained from processing the seeds of cassia obtusifolia. The term is derived from Latin origin called “Obtus” which means blunt and “folium” means leaf. In India it grows in full stretch after the end of monsoon season. Each plant can bear nearly 20cm of pods and these pods contain cylindrical shaped seeds in them. They are then removed and broken into two pieces called splits.
The splits are referred to in different terms like senna splits, torea splits, etc. However, before the splitting takes place, the raw material is sent for grading to get differentiated in terms of size. During differentiation the less developed ones are removed and good quality seeds obtained at final stage is reduced to 0.05%.
They are then sent for de-husking and de-germing process through thermal mechanical treatment. De-husking is a series of processes which involved heating, grinding, polishing and sieving. This is then followed by milling and screening to pick endosperm. The endosperm is finally separated from the germ
