Ferrous Sulfate, Grade Standard : Industrial

Ferrous sulfate is a salt with the chemical formula FeSO₄. It commonly exists as a collection of hydrates, with the heptahydrate (FeSO₄·7H₂O) being the most common. This form, also known as green vitriol or copperas, appears as blue-green crystals.

Properties:

• Appearance: Blue-green crystals (heptahydrate), white to off-white powder (anhydrous form)
• Solubility: Soluble in water, insoluble in ethanol
• Molecular Weight: 151.91 g/mol (anhydrous form), 278.01 g/mol (heptahydrate)
• Melting Point: Decomposes at 680°C
• pH: Aqueous solutions are acidic

Uses:

1. Medical: Used as an iron supplement to treat iron-deficiency anemia. It is often administered orally in tablet or liquid form.
2. Industrial: Employed in the production of iron compounds, as a reducing agent in chemical processes, in water treatment for coagulation and flocculation, and in the manufacturing of other iron salts.
3. Agricultural: Used as a soil amendment to correct iron chlorosis in plants, and as a moss killer in lawns.
4. Other Uses: Used in the dyeing process for wool and as a mordant in the textile industry.

Safety:

• Toxicity: Can be toxic if ingested in large amounts, particularly to children. Symptoms of overdose include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and severe systemic toxicity.
• Handling and Storage: Should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from moisture and incompatible substances. Proper protective equipment should be used when handling to prevent inhalation or contact with skin and eyes.

Environmental Impact: Ferrous sulfate can have environmental effects if released in large quantities, affecting water quality and aquatic life due to its acidic nature and ability to alter iron concentrations in water bodies.
