The Chickpea (Cicer arietinum) is a legume of the family Fabaceae, subfamily Faboideae. Its seeds are high in protein. It is one of the oldest cultivated legumes by humans. The other common names for the species include Garbanzo bean, Ceci bean, Chana and Bengal gram. There are basically two varieties of chickpeas, the 'Desi' or 'Bengal gram' which has darker seeds with rough coat and the 'Kabuli' also known Safed Chana or White gram , are light colored, with larger seeds and a smoother coat, mainly grown in Southern Europe, Northern Africa, South America and Indian Subcontinent, having been introduced during the 18th century to India. Kabuli (meaning 'from Kabul' in Hindi / Urdu, since they were thought to have come from Afghanistan when first seen in Indian Subcontinent).
