Gentamicin is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial eye infections (e.g. blepharitis or conjunctivitis), as well as infections of the eyes and the surrounding skin (e.g., eyelids). It can also be used to prevent infection following eye injuries or surgery. Gentamicin belongs to a group of drugs called aminoglycosides antibiotics. These antibiotics work by killing the bacteria that cause eye infections. This medication is only effective against bacterial eye infections and will not be effective against any other type of eye infection. It is important to note that using or misusing any antibiotic can reduce its effectiveness.
