Guduci is pungent, bitter and astringent in taste, sweet in post digestive effect, tissue vitalize, absorbent, hot in potency, light in action, strength giving and appetizer. It alleviates all the three Doshas and Ama (undigested food, retained in the intestines). It cures thirst, burning sensation, urinary diseases including glycosuria, cough, anemia, and jaundice, skin-diseases, Vata- Rakta (arthritis with skin lesions), fever, worm infestation and vomiting. It also cures twenty types of urinary diseases, dyspnoea, cough, haemorrhoids, and difficulty in micturition, cardiac problems and Vata Diseases.

Drug consists of dried matured pieces of stem. This is widely distributed throughout India. It is a large succulent climber with rough corky bark. Leaves – 5-10 cm. long, cordate and petioled. Flowers- panicles, small and yellow in colour. Fruits- Panicles, small and yellow in colour. Fruits- Pisiform and red when ripe. Long, filiform aerial roots are frequently developed from the branches.

Giloy has recently become quite popular when it was said that it can cure swine flu. In Ayurveda literature it is described as Amrita because of its innumerable medicinal properties.
