HOW TO USE: It's best to take lercanidipine in the morning but you can take it at any time of day. Try to make sure you take it at the same time every day. Take lercanidipine on an empty stomach, at least 15 minutes before a meal.
HOW LERCANIDIPINE WORKS: Lercanidipine is a type of medicine called a calcium channel blocker. Like other calcium channel blockers, lercanidipine works by blocking calcium going into muscles in the heart and blood vessels. Muscles need calcium to contract, so when you block the calcium, it makes the muscle cells relax and widen.
CONTRAINDICATIONS OF LERCANIDIPINE: Lercanidipine is contraindicated in patients with severe hepatic impairment or renal impairment (GFR < 30 ml/min), including patients undergoing haemodialysis (see section 4.2 and section 4.3). Lercanidipine has been associated with the development of cloudy peritoneal effluent in patients on peritoneal dialysis.
PHARMACOKINETICS OFLERCANIDIPINE: Lercanidipine is slowly but completely absorbed from the gut. It has a total bioavailability of 10% due to an extensive first-pass effect, or up to 40% if taken after a fatty meal. Highest blood plasma levels are reached after 1.5 to 3 hours.
