INTRODUCTION CBA006 Polyisobutylene (PIB) is a synthetic hydrocarbon polymer that's used in a variety of applications, including lubricants:  Base oils and thickeners: PIBs in their stable form are used as base oils and thickeners in lubricants.  Additives: PIBs in their more reactive form are used to create additives for lubricants.  Viscosity index improvers: PIBs are used to improve viscosity index.  Anti-mist agents: PIBs are used as anti-mist agents in metalworking fluids.  High-viscosity base oil: PIBs are used as high-viscosity base oil in gear oils, grease, marine oil, and two-stroke engine oils.
