Uead also known as urad, Masha, Vigna mungo, and a variety of other names, black gram is a plant highly valued in its entirety — from its roots to its seed pods. These small cylindrical beans are white on the inside, with a black seed coat. The fuzzy seed pods contain between 4-10 lentils each and grow on a bush that ranges in size from 1-3 ft. tall. Very few other members of the legume family can compete with the number of beneficial vitamins and minerals found in black gram. When these lentils are split and have the skin removed they are a creamy white color inside.
