Valacyclovir tablets, commonly known by the brand name Valtrex, are an antiviral medication used to treat infections caused by the herpes virus. It is a prodrug, meaning that once it is absorbed by the body, it is converted into the active antiviral drug, acyclovir.

Valacyclovir works by inhibiting viral DNA synthesis. The drug, once converted to acyclovir, competes with natural building blocks of DNA for incorporation into the virus's genetic material. This process effectively halts the replication of the virus, slowing its growth and spread within the body.

Valacyclovir is prescribed to treat a variety of herpes infections, including:

• Herpes Zoster (Shingles): Used to treat the painful rash caused by the varicella-zoster virus.

• Genital Herpes: Used for treating initial and recurrent outbreaks and for long-term suppressive therapy to reduce the frequency of future outbreaks. It can also reduce the risk of transmission to a sexual partner.

• Herpes Labialis (Cold Sores): Used to treat cold sores on the mouth and face.

• Chickenpox: Prescribed to treat chickenpox in children.

It's important to note that while valacyclovir can help manage symptoms, it does not cure the herpes infection. The virus remains dormant in the body between outbreaks.

The dosage and duration of treatment vary depending on the specific condition being treated, the patient's age, and their kidney function. It's crucial to follow the doctor's instructions exactly and complete the full course of treatment, even if symptoms improve. Common dosages include:

• Shingles: 1 gram three times a day for 7 days.

• Genital Herpes (initial outbreak): 1 gram twice a day for 10 days.

• Genital Herpes (recurrent outbreak): 500 mg twice a day for 3 days.

• Cold Sores: 2 grams twice a day for 1 day, taken 12 hours apart.

Valacyclovir can be taken with or without food.

Common side effects of valacyclovir include:

• Headache

• Nausea

• Stomach pain

• Diarrhea

In some cases, more serious side effects can occur, and you should seek immediate medical attention if you experience:

• Signs of a severe allergic reaction (hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat)
