Found In
Walnut grows in the north western Himalayan belt that is further extended up to Sikkim and Darjeeling. In India, Jammu & Kashmir is the largest producer of Walnut. The Walnut produced in this state contributes to the entire quantity of walnuts exported from India.
Climatic Condition Required :
Walnut requires cool climate that is completely free of frost, especially during spring season. Frost is restricted as it damages the young flowers as well as new shoots thus affecting the overall crop production. A uniform distribution of annual rainfall of 760 is required for the production of high quality crop. It is proved that Walnuts grown in higher regions of 1500 m above are of the best quality having light colored kernels and thin shells. However, in high temperature, kernels turn brown at the time of ripening.
Type of Soil Required :
For growing high grade walnut, soil should be well-drained, fertile, and deep. At present, Walnut trees are grown from seeds or by grafting or budding methods. Optimum production is expected from the plant aging from 20-25 years whereas seedling come to fruit at the age of10-15 years. In Kashmir, the walnut trees continue to grow for than 100 years. The harvesting of crops is done in middle of August till October that also depends upon the maturity of the kernels.
Flowering :
In Jammu & Kashmir, Walnut starts flowering in the month of March till April whereas in lower regions, flowering takes place earlier. The walnuts produced in the Jammu division usually have a thicker shell & are sold in local markets under the name Pahari. The walnut shell in higher altitude begins hardening in the middle of June. After this month, size of the walnut does not increase. It has been observed that during five-six after flowering, the growth of walnut takes rapidly.
Harvesting :
The crop of walnut is harvested from the mid of August and lasts up to mid of October. In higher altitude, the maturity of the nuts gets delayed thereby delay in harvesting period. The harvesting starts when a natural drop of nuts is observed or during the splitting of hull. The harvesting process involved beating the bearing branches using long poles where women collect the fallen drop. Further, the harvested crop is heaped and kept for some time till the separation of the hull becomes easier. Finally, the nuts are thoroughly washed in fast flowing streams. The drying of nut is done in the open sun till 5 to 8 days. Further, the in shell walnuts are graded and marketed.

The walnuts in these areas are divided into three categories i.e., thin, medium & hard shell .The walnuts produced in the Jammu division usually have a thicker shell.
Overall Production of Walnut :
There has been seen consistent growth in the production of walnut. At present, 63000 hectares of land are utilized in the production of walnut plantation having optimum production capacity of 60000-100000 metric tons. In1996, Food & Agriculture Organization that is a subsidiary of organ of the United Nations have conducted two-phase program to enhance the productivity of Walnut Crop.
