An infrared thermometer makes use of a lens to focus the infrared light emitting from the object onto thermopile, a detector. The thermopile is nothing but a series of thermocouples connected to each other. When infrared radiation falls on the surface of the thermopile, it gets absorbed by the surface and converted into heat which is measured by the device.
