With our experience of more than 44 Years in repair of the crankshaft, latest design of equipment, and experienced technicians, we were able to successfully repair the crankshaft by under-sizing the crank pin and maintaining the final size of 177.00 MM. The crank pin was undersized by 3.0 mm.
The radius fillet profile of both the sides was prepared and maintained, as per the Wartsila 8L20 specifications stipulated in the maintenance manual.

MAN B&W 18V23L-V0 Main Engine on board the vessel at Zanzibar, Tanzania, had a major accident, damaging the crankshaft, cylinder liners, piston, and other parts. RA Power Solutions was approached by the leading shipping company based in Zanzibar, Tanzania to inspect the YANMAR 6N18L-SV Auxiliary engine on board a vessel met with a serious accident. Three (3) technicians consisting of metal stitching expert and crankshaft grinding were deputed on the vessel at Fujairah Port, Dubai. The Yanmar Engine details are as following:- YANMAR 6N18L-SV Auxiliary Engine Accident Details: Inspection of Crankshaft and Engine Block of YANMAR 6N18L-SV. Damaged crankpin unit number #02 was inspected for the following parameters. (a) Dimensional Inspection of crankpin unit number #02 showed ovality of 0.16 MM. (b) Due to hitting of connecting rod, the crankpin developed deep depressions and hitting marks. (c) Radius fillet profile of both the sides was badly damaged. (d) Minor hairline cracks were observed on crankpin, which is common, as per our experience after such a serious accident. (e) Hardness at a few spots was observed on the higher side. (f) The engine block was badly damaged, as shown in the photographs. The total crack length was measured as 46 Inches. Action taken for Repair of Crankshaft and Engine Block of YANMAR 6N18L- SV: i) The crankpin unit number #02 was undersized by 1.20 MM, as per the recommendation of the Yanmar Engine manufacturer. The final size of the crankpin was maintained as 143.80 MM. The crank pin diameter was maintained 1.20 mm undersize. ii) The damaged engine block was repaired by our technicians by metal lock process as mentioned above, the total length of crack was 46 inches. iii) Damaged inspection window cover was replaced. iv) Undersize crankpin bearing of 1.2 MM was supplied by RA Power Solutions Pvt Ltd. v) Engine was commissioned and performance was observed satisfactorily. The vessel owned by an Italian company faced a major breakdown in one of their auxiliary engine, Himsen Hyundai 6H17/28. RA Power Solutions was approached and deputed our two technicians along with onsite crankshaft grinding equipment. The vessel was anchored at MIP Mersin, Turkey. Following are the major Engine and Crankpin details: S. No. Engine and Crankpin Details Main Observations of Crankshaft of HIMSEN HYUNDAI 6H 17/28 i) On visual inspection, it was found that it was a case of lubricating oil pump failure, damaging the bearings of all connecting rods. ii) The bearing material was found embedded on all six (6) crankpins and was carefully removed. After polishing the crankpins, the dimensional inspection was conducted. The taper, ovality ranging from 0.22 MM to 0.86 was observed. CR Pin Hardness Inspection CR Pin of HIMSEN HYUNDAI 6H 17/28 Before Repair. iii) The hardness was checked and was found within limits, except for a few spots, which were found not harmful to the crankshaft. iv) The crankpins were subject to a MPI test for crack detection and minor hairline cracks were observed, All other parameters were found within the limit. Action Taken By RA Power Solutions Technicians For Damaged Crankpins: i) The grinding of all six (6) crankpins was undertaken by our insitu crankshaft grinding machine. ii) Three (3) number of crankpins diameter was reduced by 1.00 MM and the final size was maintained as 174.00 MM. iii) Three (3) number of crankpins diameter was reduced by 1.50 MM and the final size was maintained at 173.50 MM. Action Taken By RA Power Solutions Technicians For Damaged Crankpins: The tolerance of all six (6) number crankpins was maintained with 0.02 MM.
