MXenes are a family of two-dimensional (2D) inorganic compounds with the general formula of Mn+1XnTx, where M is an early transition metal, X is carbon and/or nitrogen, and T is a functional group on the surface of an MXene (typically O, OH and F) (M. Naguib, et al. Adv.
Mater., 2014, 26, 992). MXenes have the high metallic conductivity of transition metal carbides and are (unlike other 2D materials like graphene) hydrophilic because of their hydroxyl- and oxygen-terminated surfaces.
MXenes were first discovered in 2011 at Drexel University, as a result of selectively etching the A layer out of bulk ternary transition metal carbides and nitrides, known as MAX phases, which yields multilayered MXenes.
To increase surface area and accessibility of its surface, multilayered MXenes typically undergo further processing to yield solutions of delaminated MXenes.
Due to their hydrophilicity, MXenes can be processed in aqueous and polar organic solvents to form stable colloidal solutions that can be filtered to form freestanding films and spray-coated to form transparent conductive coatings.
This provides a greater potential application for this family of materials. The first MXene discovered was Ti3C2 and it was initially investigated for its electrochemical properties in batteries and supercapacitors (B. Anasori, et al.

Zensor screen printed electrodes (SPEs) feature a carbon working electrode (central circle), carbon auxiliary (outer annular crescent), and Ag/AgCl pellet reference electrode. They can be used as low-cost disposable electrodes in aqueous solutions of moderate pH. Disposable SPEs can be used as an alternative to expensive glassy carbon or platinum electrodes for teaching experiments, or routine analyses, where a clean reproducible surface would otherwise require time-consuming electrode polishing.
Relatively large tabs at the top of the SPE enable electrical contact with standard miniature alligator clips (no special cables required).
If using solutions that contain species that might react with the Ag/AgCl pellet reference (sulfide, iodide, cyanide, ammonia, etc.) then the Zensor SE100 SPE working electrode is recommended using a conventional reference and auxiliary electrodes, with an intervening salt bridge in cases of serious interference.
Not suitable for use with organic solvents, or concentrated acidic or basic aqueous solutions.

Indium tin oxide (ITO) is a ternary composition of indium, tin, and oxygen in varying proportions. Depending on the oxygen content, Indium tin oxide can either be described as a ceramic or alloy.
Indium tin oxide is typically encountered as an oxygen-saturated composition with a formulation of 74% In, 18% O2, and 8% Sn by weight. Oxygen-saturated compositions are so typical, that unsaturated composition is termed oxygen-deficient ITO.
Indium tin oxide ITO transparent and colorless in thin layers, while in the bulk form it is yellowish to grey. In the infrared region of the spectrum, it acts as a metal-like mirror.
Indium tin oxide is one of the most widely used transparent conducting oxides because of its electrical conductivity and optical transparency, as well as the ease with which it can be deposited as a thin film.
As with all transparent conducting films, a compromise must be made between conductivity and transparency, since increasing the thickness and increasing the concentration of charge carriers increases the material’s conductivity, but decreases its transparency.
