Invariably in every soil laboratory, compaction and penetration testson soils are carried out regularly. The electrically operated mechanicalcompaction process eliminates the tedious hand compaction processand results in a considerable saving of time. With the rammersprovided and two stroke lengths available, the apparatus can be usedto carry out all the normal compaction operations required in soiltesting laboratories including the CBR tests.This is a new design motor driven mechanical compactor, useful forsoil compaction in 100 mm or 150 mm dia moulds. The rammer travelsacross the mould and the table rotates the mould in equal steps on astable base. The number of blows per layer can be set at the beginningof the test.

The Pavement Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) is a very robustinstrument, designed for rapid in-situ measurement of the structuralproperties of existing road pavement constructed with unboundmaterials. Continuous measurements can be made down to a depth of800 mm, or when an extension is fitted, to a depth of 1200 mm. Wherepavement layers have different strengths, the boundaries can beidentified and the thickness of the layers determined. A typical testtakes only a few minutes and the instrument therefore, provides a veryefficient method of obtaining information which would normallyrequire test-pits. Correlations have been established betweenmeasurements with DCP and California Bearing Ratio (CBR), so thatresults can be interpreted and compared with CBR specifications forpavement design. Agreement is generally good over most of therange, but differences are apparent at low values of CBR, especiallyfor fine grained materials.The design of the pavement DCP issimilar to that described by Kleyn, Maree and Savage (1982) in theirpaper. The application of thepavement DCP to determine thebearing properties and performanceof road pavements published inproceedings of InternationalSymposium on Bearing capacity ofroads and airfields, Vol.1, (TheNorwegian Institute of Technology)and developed by TRRL, UK. Itincorporates a 8 kg weight droppingthrough a height of 575 mm and a60 cone having a diameter of 20mm. It is supplied complete withassembly tools and weighs 20 kgapprox.The DCP needs three operators, oneto hold the instrument, one to raiseand drop the weight and atechnician to record the results. Theinstrument is held vertically and theweight carefully raised to the handlelimit and then allowed to fall onto theanvil.
