Stainless Steel 304/304L

304 is available in Sheet, Strip, Plate, Tube, Bar (Round), Rod, Rings, Forgings.

Type 304 is a variation of the basic 18-8 grade, Type 304, with a higher chromium and lower carbon content. Lower carbon minimizes chromium carbide precipitation due to welding and its susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. In many instances, it can be used in the ”as-welded“ condition, while Type 304 must be annealed in order to retain adequate corrosion resistance.

Type 304L is an extra low-carbon variation of Type 304 with a 0.03% maximum carbon content that eliminates carbide precipitation due to welding. As a result, this alloy can be used in the ”as-welded“ condition, even in severe corrosive conditions. It often eliminates the necessity of annealing weldments except for applications specifying stress relief. It has slightly lower mechanical properties than Type 304.

Stainless Steel 202 Strip Processing
The annealing temperature for Type 202 is between 1850-2000°F. Rapid cooling through the carbide precipitation range (1500 – 800 o F) is necessary to keep the carbides in solution and prevent sensitization. Type 202 is not hardenable by thermal treatment; it is only hardenable by cold working

Stainless Steel 202 Strip Welding:
Type 202 can be welded by all conventional methods applied to 18 percent chromium, 8 percent nickel steels. Filler metal of the conventional chromium-nickel analyses can be used. Like other austenitic stainless steels where carbon is not controlled below 0.03%, Type 202 is susceptible to intergranular corrosion in the weld heat affected zone.

Stainless Steel 202 Strip Corrosion:
Type 202 is resistant to a wide variety of mild to moderately corrosive environments. It has corrosion resistance approaching that of Types 301and has been successfully substituted for 304 in many mild environments.

Stainless Steel 304h Strip Applications:

Stainless Steel 304h Strip Heat Resistance:
Good oxidation resistance in intermittent service to 870O C and in continuous service to 920O C
Continuous use of Alloy 304 in the 425-860°C range is not recommended if subsequent aqueous corrosion resistance is important
Alloy 304H has higher strength at elevated temperatures so is often used for structural and pressure-containing applications at temperatures above about 500°C and up to about 800°C
Alloy 304H will become sensitized in the temperature range of 425-860°C; this is not a problem for high temperature applications, but will result in reduced aqueous corrosion resistance.

Stainless Steel 304h Strip Corrosion Resistance:

  • Resistance to corrosion in oxidizing environments is a result from the 18 to 19% chromium that the 304 alloys contain
  • Resistance to moderately aggressive organic acids is a result from the 9 to 11% nickel that the 304 alloys contain
  • At times, Alloy 304L may show a lower corrosion rate than the higher carbon Alloy 304; otherwise, the 304, 304L, and 304H alloys may be considered to perform uniformly in most corrosive environments.


Stainless Steel 304h Strip Welding Characteristics:

  • Readily welded by most standard processes.
  • May be necessary to anneal the plate after welding
  • Annealing helps restore corrosion resistance lost by the sensitization.


Stainless Steel 304h Strip Processing - Hot Forming:

  • Working tempertarues of 1652-2102 degrees F are recommended
  • Material should be annealed at 1900 degrees F
  • Material should be water quenched or or rapidly cooled


Stainless Steel 304h Strip Processing - Cold Forming:

  • Alloy is quite ductile and forms easily
  • Helps increase strength and hardness of alloy
  • May leave alloy slightly magnetic


Stainless Steel 304h Strip Machinability:

  • Subject to work hardening during deformation

Stainless Steel 304/304L

304 is available in Sheet, Strip, Plate, Tube, Bar (Round), Rod, Rings, Forgings.
Type 304 is a variation of the basic 18-8 grade, Type 304, with a higher chromium and lower carbon content. Lower carbon minimizes chromium carbide precipitation due to welding and its susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. In many instances, it can be used in the ”as-welded“ condition, while Type 304 must be annealed in order to retain adequate corrosion resistance.
Type 304L is an extra low-carbon variation of Type 304 with a 0.03% maximum carbon content that eliminates carbide precipitation due to welding. As a result, this alloy can be used in the ”as-welded“ condition, even in severe corrosive conditions. It often eliminates the necessity of annealing weldments except for applications specifying stress relief. It has slightly lower mechanical properties than Type 304.

Stainless Steel 202 Strip ProcessingThe annealing temperature for Type 202 is between 1850-2000°F. Rapid cooling through the carbide precipitation range (1500 – 800 o F) is necessary to keep the carbides in solution and prevent sensitization. Type 202 is not hardenable by thermal treatment; it is only hardenable by cold working

Stainless Steel 202 Strip Welding:Type 202 can be welded by all conventional methods applied to 18 percent chromium, 8 percent nickel steels. Filler metal of the conventional chromium-nickel analyses can be used. Like other austenitic stainless steels where carbon is not controlled below 0.03%, Type 202 is susceptible to intergranular corrosion in the weld heat affected zone.

Stainless Steel 202 Strip Corrosion:Type 202 is resistant to a wide variety of mild to moderately corrosive environments. It has corrosion resistance approaching that of Types 301and has been successfully substituted for 304 in many mild environments.

Stainless Steel 304h Strip Heat Resistance:Good oxidation resistance in intermittent service to 870O C and in continuous service to 920O CContinuous use of Alloy 304 in the 425-860°C range is not recommended if subsequent aqueous corrosion resistance is importantAlloy 304H has higher strength at elevated temperatures so is often used for structural and pressure-containing applications at temperatures above about 500°C and up to about 800°CAlloy 304H will become sensitized in the temperature range of 425-860°C; this is not a problem for high temperature applications, but will result in reduced aqueous corrosion resistance.

Stainless Steel 304h Strip Corrosion Resistance:

  • Resistance to corrosion in oxidizing environments is a result from the 18 to 19% chromium that the 304 alloys contain
  • Resistance to moderately aggressive organic acids is a result from the 9 to 11% nickel that the 304 alloys contain
  • At times, Alloy 304L may show a lower corrosion rate than the higher carbon Alloy 304; otherwise, the 304, 304L, and 304H alloys may be considered to perform uniformly in most corrosive environments.


Stainless Steel 304h Strip Welding Characteristics:

  • Readily welded by most standard processes.
  • May be necessary to anneal the plate after welding
  • Annealing helps restore corrosion resistance lost by the sensitization.


Stainless Steel 304h Strip Processing - Hot Forming:

  • Working tempertarues of 1652-2102 degrees F are recommended
  • Material should be annealed at 1900 degrees F
  • Material should be water quenched or or rapidly cooled


Stainless Steel 304h Strip Processing - Cold Forming:

  • Alloy is quite ductile and forms easily
  • Helps increase strength and hardness of alloy
  • May leave alloy slightly magnetic
