Phosphoric acid, also known as orthophosphoric acid (chemical formula HPO), exists as a colorless, viscous liquid or orthorhombic crystalline solid in its pure form. It is odorless with a distinctly sour taste. The commercially available 85% phosphoric acid solution appears as a clear or slightly tinted, syrupy liquid. This compound has a melting point of 42.35C and a specific gravity of 1.70. As a high-boiling-point acid, it mixes completely with water in all proportions. When heated to 213C, it begins to lose water molecules, forming pyrophosphoric acid, and further heating to 300C converts it into metaphosphoric acid. With a relative density of 1.834, it readily dissolves in both water and ethanol.
As a typical inorganic acid of moderate strength, phosphoric acid exhibits weaker acidity than strong mineral acids like sulfuric, hydrochloric, and nitric acids, but demonstrates stronger acidic properties compared to weak acids such as acetic, boric, and carbonic acids. Its reaction with sodium carbonate yields different phosphate salts depending on the pH conditions. The acid can cause skin irritation and tissue damage upon contact. Concentrated phosphoric acid becomes corrosive when heated in porcelain containers. Due to its hygroscopic nature, proper storage requires airtight containers.
Commercial phosphoric acid typically consists of a thick solution containing approximately 82% HPO. The solution's high viscosity results from extensive hydrogen bonding between its molecules.
